Carson

Carson ’ s Story

Oct. 20, 2007

Mary writes: After no less than 20 pees, two poops and a big drink of water, Carson has landed. As expected he is somewhat stressed and likely lost without his "harem". He's quite a lover boy, and is overly eager and looking for love and attention. His nub goes all the time. I gave him a bit to eat but only ate a couple of mouthfuls and the rest is sitting in the bowl. We've been out for a walk to try and stretch his legs and burn some energy off. He's a bit of a puller and seemed a little nervous of some cars going by, but otherwise he's got lots of energy. He was quite fascinated by the TV when I turned it on. Right now he's trying to settle in, and goes and lies in the crate, stays a few minutes and moves out to the floor. He got some pretty big calluses on his elbows and feet, obviously didn't have much in the way of soft bedding. He's certainly far more social and confident than the girls are. He does smell and needs a bath, but he's had a long enough day today. Maybe tomorrow if I have a chance before he goes to the kennel. He lifted his leg once (on my son’s sweatshirt) in the house, but has been good otherwise, although hasn't been left unattended either. I'd love to be able to keep him here, but I've got enough on my plate with my own 3 dogs. Hopefully we'll be able to get him out of the kennel quickly and into a loving home.

Linda writes: As you know Mary and I moved Carson - our puppy mill boy - down to Liz's in Hamilton yesterday and introduced him to the irascible Keno. It has been problematic introducing Keno to other dogs because she's extremely dominant and won't tolerate any funny business, dammit! It other words, she's a crotchety old B... :-) Anyway, the introduction went very well. Carson is excellent at doggie language and he gave Keno no cause for worry. It was interesting to watch him navigate around her. She was totally focused on him to the point where she was quivering and he was doing his darndest to avoid eye contact and generally remain calm around her. I checked in with Liz today and things are going well. Her husband took the day off work to spend with the dogs and there was no trouble, he walked both with no incidents and both curled up in the same bed for their afternoon nap. So, so far, so good and I'll keep checking in on them.

As for Carson's transition he's doing very well. He doesn’t seem to be too shy and there's no question he has spent at least part of his life as a house pet. How he ended up in a mill is a mystery.

Linda writes: I spoke to Liz last week and Carson and Keno are doing great. They have even begun to play together in the backyard with Keno's soccer ball. Quite amazing!
