Blanche came into our life after spending nearly a year in a shelter. She had been abandoned by her previous owner and her odds of being adopted were slim to none being deaf, very hyper and 7 years old. The shelter contacted Boxer Rescue for help. We just couldn’t resist her mushy story and decided to foster her. Not having had a stable home in a while, she was in desperate need of stability and a loving family.

We picked her up on a cold evening in December 2007. We noticed two things right away - she was very excitable and in desperate need of a bath! We became acutely aware that she is quite a licker and has the equipment to thoroughly exfoliate you! It is hard to actually get a picture of her without her tongue hanging out. After having been with us for only a couple of weeks, we knew we couldn’t let her go and asked permission to adopt her.

We decided on a new name for her - Prada - because she is our little white princess. She integrated very well with our other two boxer boys, but having a deaf dog is a challenge. We had to figure out what signs she already knew and develop new ones for other commands. Needless to say, it took a while but she is coming along just fine.

Prada’s arrival was timely as we lost one of our boys, Joker, in March 2008. It was fate that she arrived when she did and became part of our little family just in time to make the transition easier for our other boxer, Dozer. They are now very good pals and play together often.

In closing, every dog brings something special into his or her owner’s lives. In the case of Prada, it is her determination to prevail and unconditional devotion that have clearly stood out for us. We love her dearly and hope she will be with us for years to come.

Bruno came to us a little on the thin side. He is now looking fabulous mundo!! We refer to him as the big lug but day by day he is showing us that he is a definite male with a tender side for cuddling. He has adopted our huge leather lazy boy as his own. He tends to get right in your face if he wants to play and you have other ideas. He and Josh, our human son, have become quite the pair for hanging out. I need to say Josh is 20 and Bruno suits his made to order list for requirements of the perfect male dog!! This leaves Nutmeg to cuddle and love up our daughter. They both however like to sleep with mom and dad. Not at the end of the bed but right up in there in the middle. Once we are both up they each make their way to the beds of their favourite companion.

Boxer Rescue has changed our lives and made it richer, fuller and complete. Not to mention busier, more challenging and noisier but all worth it for the love that exudes from these two gorgeous creatures who are yet to realize they are NOT human. Thanks for the life enrichment road we are on.

Nova

I have lots of pictures to send you but I need the help of one of my children to put them in the computer. Some are of Nova sleeping with our most aggressive cat, so she has come a long way. This morning I caught them nuzzling each other in the kitchen before breakfast. That is not to say that she doesn’t still chase but for the most part she remembers it is against the rules. As well, they are becoming a constant so she is getting used to them.

She has taken to going in to my daughters’ bedroom, before the rest of the house goes to bed, and sleeping in there with the cat. She doesn’t even want to sleep with Bean in our room anymore. We think it is because Alana’s room is the warmest.

Today we left her alone in the house for about 15 – 20 minutes and when I came home all was well. She was just playing with Bean and didn’t seem too concerned that no one was home. The rough play has diminished somewhat, but not completely. She sleeps a lot more during the day than when she first arrived, probably adopting a bit of the lazier lifestyle of Bean. He likes to play and then he crashes for a couple of hours, and now so does she. This is a good development as now their respective war wounds can heal. They have cut eachother up quite a bit while playing.

She is funny though! She will be somewhere in the house and all of a sudden she will arrive with a shopping bag full of stuff or a sleeping bag she has dragged out of someone’s closet, and she has become quite the guard dog. We live next door to a school and she likes to protect us from those nasty children who are just waiting to burglarize our house on their way home from school.

She has adjusted very well and is really a very sweet girl. Right now she is sleeping on the bed with the most timid of our cats. So, all is well with Nova!

Update 24 October 2008

Click for enlarged imageIt has been nine months to the day that we took Nova and I wanted to give you a brief update. She is a wonderful, sweet and funny dog. And you would be shocked to know that she now is bordering on “time to watch her weight.”

She is still hyperactive in spirts, and lounges on the couch/bed the rest of the time. Her most favorite thing in the world is to go for an hour long run with Sarah and sometimes in the heat she would come home and lie on the ground while we hosed her down. If Sarah leaves the house in work-out clothes to go to the gym, she sits at the door and cries like a baby after she has left. She is inconsolable and it is heartbreaking.

Bean and Nova are best buddies most of the time but he still finds her a bit much on occasion, and has taken to sleeping on the stairs sometimes to get rid of her. But mostly they play and sleep together. She still chases the cats occasionally but none of them are afraid of her anymore because she never hurts them. Nova is so sweet in temperament and with food. I know that a baby could take food out of her bowl without a problem. I think the reason she has gained so much weight is because she is so gentle when you give her treats that everybody does.

But she is happy, healthy and much loved. Susan Click for enlarged image
